In the very heart of the Massif Central mountains of southern France, the Lot River cuts it's way through the limestone plateau, bordered on either side by high, rugged cliffs. There hidden away in that valley, lies three villages bearing the name of TOIRAC. Towering above them, as if carved from the rock itself, clings the ancient feudal castle called LARROQUE-TOIRAC.
In the time of Catherine of Medici, there was an admiral by the name of Toirac who, under the pretext of betrayal, was beheaded and his body drawn through the streets of Paris. this was in 1548 and it triggered the massacre of St. Bartholomew's Day and the ensuing 100 years of religious wars. It is also known that in the early 1600's a young singer, known as bard Toirac, became a favorite entertainer of his majesty, Louis XIII. The wellknown writer, Alexander Dumas, refers to a Count Toirac in the The Three Musketeers. Cardinal Richeliew distinguished Count Toirac as a hero, worthy of high honors for his performance in battle.
Coming under continual persecution for thier beliefs, the Toirac descendants left France and migrated to the New World. Today only one family line is known to remain who still spell their name the same way. This limited edition drawing is in memory of Dorothy Lee Toirac (1915-1982) who traveled to France to unearth our heritage for us. The drawing is coming soon!
